Ever so often I do receive requests from clients with varying levels of expertise in editing vector graphics asking me how to accomplish some simple but key changes before they can apply my designs in their projects. With this crowd in mind and taking to the heart the maxim that "a picture is worth a thousand words", I decided to experiment and see where 20 pictures per second would get me. ;-)

In other words, welcome to the first installment in a series of Quick Tips videos by LittleLion Studio!

Without further ado, please feel free to watch the video on how to adjust a pattern’s size and repeats for final printing.

This video should be particularly interesting to those looking to print wide format jobs such as wallpaper, textile, canvas, posters and similar items.

If the resolution is too low for your taste and bandwidth, make sure to click/select "720" and watch the HD version in full screen mode.

Creating images from a blank digital canvas can be liberating and all but if your goal is to reach the microstock audience, you’d better keep your work useful. Unless of course, you are planning on selling your work through art galleries, but that is a totally different ball game…

Sometimes usability can play as the enemy though, since it trims off all sorts of initiative when you find yourself in one of those days with your creative juices flowing all over. The result: tunnel vision.

In an effort to balancing things out, I discovered that "simplicity" does quite alright for me. So here is the outcome of some moderately fun time playing with the notion of flat ripple effects. I hope you like and enjoy using them. :)

The fifth installment of the "Baby Prints" collection brings a very important business implication for those who, like myself, sell Royalty Free licenses to the microstock market.

Unfortunately, once an image hits the microstock agencies, behind its sales hides an enormous number of irregular license uses. Honestly, I cannot put a number on it nor can I infer that the irregularities derive from lack of understanding of license terms or otherwise, but one thing I am absolutely positive of is that more often than not images purchased under private use terms get commercial use right and left.

I do understand that this may sound like a generic, biased accusation but, please, bear with me (and just to clarify matters, if you here reading this, it means that you are one of my respectful and faithful clients whom I nurture and care for). My allegations do have a solid base. All I need to do is visit a graphics recognition search engine such as Tineye and cross check the use of some of my most popular images or elements against the number of commercial licenses sold through microstock agencies. Well, let’s just say that if I were to be paid for all those commercial licenses Tineye finds floating on the web only (I am not even talking about Print media), my microstock monthly income would increase by a factor of 3 or 4. So take my word for it: if you are in microstock, your images will be abused, period.

But what all this has to do with the release of "Life in the Woods" – Baby Print? As a direct consequence of the license abuse discussed above, the longer I take on researching, conceptualizing, creating, trying and testing each print, the greater my losses when the final image gets improper commercial use, therefore I learned the hard way that I must take a few measures in order to minimize this issue, ergo the creation of prints mixing elements from previous prints.

If you have been following the release of this series, you will notice that "Life in the Woods" is a blend of "Queen of Dots" and "Breezy Meadows". To the untrained eye, it might look like a straight mix, but it is not. It does require a certain amount of work adjusting distribution, colors and hierarchy, but it obviously demands way less time than creating a new print from scratch. This way I manage to maximize the work I put into brand new prints while softening the impact of license abuse. The best thing of all is that the resulting prints are beautiful in their own right! Wouldn’t you agree? (Okay, I may be missing out on humbleness here, but come on…)

To wrap this up, since I talked so much about (im)proper copyright use, I investigated and found out to my utter surprise that "Bambi" wasn’t created by Walt Disney but by an Austrian gentleman named Felix Salten, published by Twin Books in Germany in 1923, as you can verify by the consequent Lawsuit here. There you go, Walt Disney Company infringing copyright so they can entertain children all over the world while claiming all the awards, recognition and profits from somebody else’s work… who knew? :-o (Of course, the Bambi copyright issue is more complex than that, allowing for several interpretations of the misused license terms acquired by Disney, but the whole thing is very emblematic all the same.)

Lori, herself, seems to be a unique individual who loves "fonts, tea and 3-legged cats"(yes, she adopted two of those!).

The company offers fully customizable (no small feat!) stationery for personal, baby, kids and occasion notes. In the categories of her store where LittleLion Studio is present, it actually represents, on average, 84% of all the offerings (yes, I did the math… I am that nerdy…). What can I say to that but… wow!!!

Not without reason, Lori’s work ended up being featured in widely known websites about design, such as FFFFound and oh joy! for its distinct quality, clarity and elegance.

In the brick and mortar world, I have been asked several times about how my images come to existence so I decided to unashamedly assume you would like to hear about it as well. This is how the process unfolds…
In all fairness, each image has its own story and a different set of steps until its conclusion but some of these steps are often shared among them, so with such focus in mind let me tell you about how I created the "Mosaic Forest" seamless pattern.

Nature is a recurrent theme in my work thus making nature photography an important source of reference and inspiration to me. Most often I refer to pictures for their color palette, not this time though… This time around I resorted to nao’s most excellent portfolio on Flickr, in particular a set of pictures featuring some exuberant rounded bushes (if you know how they are called or where they grow, please, feel free to jump in). I simply couldn’t take the harmonic rounded shapes and undulating gradients out of my head and so, armed with the poetic license of a non-realistic style, I went right to work.

I drew the pattern entirely by hand on 5 sheets of tracing paper using a marker, alternating their stacking order randomly. In so doing I managed to draw in layers which later would help making the transition from paper to digital canvas way smoother. As most things in digital design, there

are always several ways of achieving the same result but scanning those 5 drawings separately instantaneously generated an interesting combination of grouped elements to be color manipulated with greater freedom and efficiency inside Adobe Illustrator.

Next in line was making the pattern seamless, a mathematical game which gets pretty visual after a while. A pattern, as the word implies, will always land a geometrical shape. Still… I always try to make my patterns the most organic possible. After I’m done with that, comes the real fun… coloring! It is impressive how a different color way can transform an image. At the same time, it becomes so easy to turn a beautiful image into a piece of junk, by simply not picking the right combination for the color palette. This is true not only in regards to Color Theory but also commercially. Several of my images are sold in different color ways and very often the same client purchases the exact same image in all their color gamut. It is not because the clients don’t know how to manipulate colors in a vector program, trust me, it’s because they understand how difficult it can be to group them properly.

And so we got to our final destination. You may now depart (but not without first clicking on the patterns to see them in a repeat… it’s worth it!). I’ll see you in the next trip.

elcome to LittleLion Studio’s blog, or should I say welcome to my blog? Either way, you are very much welcome! Truth is it is a blurred line between myself, Leo, and LittleLion Studio at least for the time being. With that said, let me give you a quick tour so that you’re right at home in no time.

First off, the time you spend here is supposed to be a pleasant one so feel free to explore at your own pace and to contact me at any time with suggestions, constructive criticism or rants, the door is always open. Above all though, share your thoughts with us through the comments section. Whenever you ask yourself "should comment on this?", the answer is a sounding "yes, you should!!".

Back to our tour, I initially divided this blog into seven categories which might expand or shrink, we’ll see… In the "All Business" category you will find posts about, well, the business side of things or what it takes to make a living out of graphics content creation. In the "Inspired by" section, I try to bring to you some of the steps involved into turning a blank canvas (sometimes an inquisitive, daring monster, trust me!) into a vector art that someone, somewhere, will think of as the perfect fit for their project. "Featured in" is a bit of showboating on my part (apologies in advance), where I will mention all walks of projects in which LittleLion took part in. As a matter of fact, you might just stumble upon some of my work applied into some product which I probably never heard of, that’s the beauty of microstock (more on this later), so please, make sure to drop me a line whenever that happens.

Blogs are supposed to be informal, so here I decided to create a new paragraph… Anyway, there is the "Out of the Oven" category featuring recently released work and "Jump Starting", which I really hope will bring you back here regularly as I try to give you tips on starting
your own creative projects.

‘But wait, there’s more!’ oh boy… from here you can head to microstock sites where my work is available for purchase (soon enough I will start selling it here as well, I’ll keep you posted) or contact me directly with enquiries for commissioned projects. Also, you can become our fan on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and all that jazz. Be my guest at the "Blog Roll" and find out about sites I follow. Oh… and there is a "Newsletter" on your way, so go ahead and subscribe to it right now! Lastly, if you’re Press or want to mention LittleLion Studio, this blog or myself in your own blog, magazine or newspaper, check the "Info" section, there you will find everything you need.

Well, I guess this is it! As I said on my "Greetings Message", I am so happy you came! Keep coming back and I’ll stay happy! ;-)
